This series borrows decorative elements and symbolic imagery from the traditions of miniature painting
that flourished at the medieval Persian and Mughal courts.  These traditional forms are juxtaposed with
contemporary images that reference the ongoing oppression of women.  The texture effects recall the
experience of seeing through cloth.   Much like in the Thousand and One Nights, fictional stories within
stories, intermingled with real people and places, are woven into Scheherazade's ongoing narrative.
The term Pillow Book refers to a personal collection of poems, sketches, lists, social commentary and
philosophical musings about life, first written by Sei Shonagon, a court lady in medieval Heian Japan.
The series incorporates borrowed  images from Japanese p
rints of "the floating world."
